+ <p>In 2008 was when I got what I asked for my birthday : a copy of openbsd's install disk (then version 4.3)
+ as well as the British Green shirt I wear on the iconic <a href="pix/obsd.jpg">shot</a> of my arrival to the end of the hike at La Fruitière (Cauterêts).</p>
+
+ <p>I was formerly still a novice in UNIX-likes, having converted my personal computer (present from dad in 2006) to FLOSS not long before.
+ I had very fast understood the point in the authenticity of the *BSD code originating from the Source, but this did not suffice to contain
+ the general enthusiasm for the penguin. Of course I started with Ubuntu.</p>
+
+ <p>It was at the turn of Summer when I attempted to take the leap and use for the better an OS both “free” and
+ <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EJEUYUPtNWA&list=PLdArachVKgnZ4-RPot9EbKBdyR4qtzIOo&index=4">neatly designed</a>.
+ I was, alas, wrongly as detailed below, intimidated by the apparent elitism and the demanding level required by the blowfish team. Unaware therefore I pulled back to
+ the <a href="pix/beastie.gif">dæmon</a> community leaving the former to contemplate my nascent hacker face from its case.</p>
+
+ <p>My great big venture went wrong. It was precipitation and my ignorance of the concept of “slices” –absent
+ from Linux– that anointed me. Less is more though, and my data was recovered many thanks to the princeless
+ <a href="https://www.cgsecurity.org/wiki/TestDisk">testdisk</a> utility.</p>
+
+ <p>Frustration got the better of curiosity and I put aside the descendants of the original family to get back to Linus. Another reason (in addition to the crash) for
+ the fact resides in the manifest uneasiness of <a href="https://invisible-island.net/ncurses/">ncurses interfaces</a> (which certainly may be mouseless yet
+ mostly use directional arrows ...) for something like an operating system install which should be a simple formality.
+ As demonstrated by openbsd which I would discover more than a decade later, biting my fingers off.</p>
+
+ <p>I could have been a badass UNIX wizard ... I ended up a wannabe Linux sysadmin.</p>

+ <p>C'est en 2008 que j'ai reçu ce que j'avais commandé pour mon anniversaire :
+ une copie du CD d'installation d'openbsd (version 4.3 à l'époque) ainsi que le t-shirt
+ vert anglais que je porte sur la fameuse <a href="pix/obsd.jpg">photo</a> de mon arrivée à la randonnée de la Fruitière (Cauterêts).</p>
+
+ <p>J'étais jadis encore novice dans l'utilisation des systèmes apparentés UNIX,
+ ayant converti mon ordinateur personnel (cadeau du paternel en 2006) au librisme depuis peu. J'avais très vite
+ compris l'intérêt de l'authenticité du code des *BSD venant du source originel, mais
+ ceci ne suffit pas à endiguer l'engouement général pour les GNU/Linux plus populaires.
+ J'avais évidemment commencé par Ubuntu.</p>
+
+ <p>C'est donc, dis-je, au tournant de l'été que j'ai voulu franchir un cap et employer pour de
+ bon un système à la fois “libre” et
+ <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EJEUYUPtNWA&list=PLdArachVKgnZ4-RPot9EbKBdyR4qtzIOo&index=4">proprement conçu</a>.
+ Je fus hélas, à tort comme expliqué en suivant, intimidé par l'élitisme apparent
+ et le niveau d'exigence requis par l'équipe du poisson-lune. C'est donc inconscient
+ que je me suis rabattu sur la communauté du <a href="pix/beastie.gif">daïmon</a> en laissant le premier contempler depuis sa jaquette mon visage de hacker naissant.</p>
+
+ <p>Voilà bien ma plus grande bêtise. C'est la précipitation et mon ignorance
+ du concept des “slices” (tranches) –absent de Linux– qui m'ont anéanti.
+ Cependant, qui peut le plus peut le moins, et l'inénarrable <a href="https://www.cgsecurity.org/wiki/TestDisk_FR">testdisk</a>
+ m'a permis de récupérer mon contenu.</p>
+
+ <p>La frustration l'emporta sur la curiosité et je mis de côté les descendants de la famille originelle
+ pour faire comme tout le monde et m'en retourner au pingouin. Une seconde raison (en plus du crash) de ce fait réside
+ dans l'inconfort manifeste des <a href="https://invisible-island.net/ncurses/">interfaces ncurses</a> (qui certes n'emploient
+ que le clavier mais principalement les flèches ...) pour quelque chose comme l'installation d'un OS qui devrait
+ être une simple formalité. Comme le démontre l'emploi d'openbsd tel que je le découvrirai
+ une dizaine d'années plus tard en m'en mordant les doigts.</p>

+ <p>Linus Torvalds started Linux (then intended to be named Freax, for freedom, freak, and the X of UNIX – reminiscent from the older phreax of phone freaks,
+ the hackers' grandparents) in the early 90's when he was a student at the Helsinki University, as a project because he didn't have enough money to purchase for himself
+ a licensed version of UNIX. The rumour also circulates that he designed it to teach himself the workings and standards of UNIX, or to teach other students.</p>
+
+ <p>BSD<sup>1</sup> is “traditional UNIX trademark” (in the words of Eric Raymond) : it evolved from the very code generated for the original UNIX itself,
+ by the Bell Laboratories for the American Telegraph and Telecom (AT&T) corporation employing academic research efforts<sup>2</sup>. However this ended up in a trial where
+ the university was sued for using and distributing free copies of what AT&T considered was their private property.</p>
+
+ <p>This marks the initial split of the BSD development branches into separate factions. 386BSD was maintained by the Jolitz couple. At the same time,
+ a FTP server for 4.2BSD was maintained by a community of online users where everyone could send their code and patches. This later turned out to become FreeBSD,
+ while Theo de Raadt and other found the process too anarchic and started out their own NetBSD fork in '93. Unfortunately Theo had to split and was joined with
+ other members of the team when he started his own fork as a “benevolent dictator”, OpenBSD.</p>
+
+ <p>At the same time all across the US, at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), Richard Stallman had designed the GNU<sup>3</sup> environment, for which
+ he still needed a kernel. The <a href="pix/print.jpg">hacker lore</a> has it that the reason why he embraced free software was when he complained that he couldn't fix his own printer as
+ it was delivered without source code. As he was missing the kernel for his operating system, the Linux community came in and today we have the GNU/Linux operating system.</p>
+
+ <p>Presently (2022) there are three main versions of the BSD operating system, the “specialty” of which is coined by all three in their respective mottos :</p>
+
+ <ul><li><i>“The power to serve”</i> – <a href="https://www.freebsd.org/">FreeBSD</a> concentrates on being fit for servers,
+ and is notably used by companies such as Netflix and Apple.</li>
+ <li><i>“Of course, it runs NetBSD !”</i> – <a href="https://www.netbsd.org/">NetBSD</a> concentrates on portability,
+ a versatile system that is able to run on any machine (no matter how old, basic or exotic). Records of contributions by Julian Assange from the late '90s
+ can still be found on community servers and mailing lists</li>
+ <li><i>“Only two remote holes in the default install, in a heck of a long time!”</i> – <a href="https://www.openbsd.org">OpenBSD</a>
+ concentrates on security, sane defaults and sane/minimalistic coding practices. It is notably reputed for the quality and readability of its man pages.</li></ul>
+

+ <p>Linus Torvalds lança Linux — qu'il voulait alors nommer Phreax, en référence à ‘freedom’ (liberté),
+ ‘freak’ (bizarro), et au X de UNIX (reminiscent des phone freaks, ancêtres des hackers) — au début des années 90 quand
+ il était étudiant à l'Université de Helsinki, en guise de projet du fait qu'il n'avait pas assez de moyens pour se procurer une version
+ licenciée de UNIX. La rumeur circule également qu'il l'aurait conçue pour apprendre en autodidacte le fonctionnement et les standards d'UNIX,
+ ou pour enseigner à d'autres étudiants.</p>
+
+ <p>Les BSD<sup>1</sup> sont “dans la droite lignée d'UNIX” (selon les termes d'Eric Raymond) : ils ont évolué à partir du
+ code de l'UNIX originel, confectionné en 1970 au sein des laboratoires de l'entreprise Bell pour l'Association Américaine des Télégraphes et
+ des Télécommunications (AT&T, le France Télécom américain) mobilisant des efforts de la Recherche universitaire<sup>2</sup>.
+ Mais l'épopée se conclut par un conflit lors duquel AT&T traîna les universitaires en justice pour avoir utilisé et distribué
+ gratuitement des copies d'un code qu'AT&T considérait être leur propriété à part entière.</p>
+
+ <p>Ceci marqua la division initiale des branches de développement de BSD en diverses factions. 386BSD était maintenu par le couple Jolitz.
+ Simultanément, un serveur FTP pour 4.2BSD était maintenu par une communauté d'utilisateurs connectés où chacun pouvait appliquer son code et ses patches.
+ Plus tardivement ce dernier projet prit la forme de FreeBSD, tandis que Theo de Raadt et d'autres furent rebutés par une relative absence d'organisation qu'ils jugèrent trop
+ anarchique et entamèrent leur propre fork ‘NetBSD’ en 1993. En véritable visionnaire, ce fut Theo qui proposa le nom, suggérant que
+ “l'internet prendra de l'importance dans les années à venir” ... mais il en fut exclu pour manque de courtoisie sur les listes de diffusion.
+ Voyant son accès aux sources révoqué, il engagea une mutinerie en forkant le projet pour donner naissance à OpenBSD – le nom est lié
+ à la volonté de garantir à tous l'accès en lecture aux sources du projet — lorsqu'il fut rejoint par d'autres anciens pour former
+ une équipe où il tient encore aujourd'hui le rôle d'ultime décisionnaire en tant que “dictateur bienveillant.”</p>
+
+ <p>En même temps à l'autre bout des USA, au MIT (Massachusetts Institute of Technology), Richard Stallman achevait la conception d'un environnement utilisateur
+ pour les besoins de son projet GNU<sup>3</sup>, dont en revanche le noyau se faisait attendre. La <a href="pix/print.jpg">légende hacker</a> dit que la raison pour laquelle
+ il avait auparavant donné naissance au concept d'open
+ source – spécifiquement free software ou logiciel libre — dont il est encore aujourd'hui le chantre principal ; est qu'il se trouva incapable
+ de réparer une malfonction sur l'imprimante de son propre labo étant donné que son fournisseur ne l'accompagnait pas du code source. Le développement du noyau
+ <a href="https://www.gnu.org/software/hurd/">Hurd</a> se voyant de plus en plus retardé, il saisit l'opportunité offerte par la communauté
+ Linux et nous avons aujourd'hui le système d'exploitation GNU/Linux.</p>
+
+ <p>Présentement (2022) il y a trois principales versions des systèmes d'exploitation BSD, dont les particularités d'application sont illustrées
+ par leurs devises respectives :</p>
+
+ <ul><li><i>“La puissance au service”</i> – <a href="https://www.freebsd.org/">FreeBSD</a> entend convenir aux serveurs,
+ et est notamment employé par des entreprises comme Netflix et Apple.</li>
+
+ <li><i>“Bien sûr, ça tourne sous NetBSD !”</i> – <a href="https://www.netbsd.org">NetBSD</a> entend répondre
+ aux besoins de portabilité, étant un système versatile capable de fonctionner peu importe la machine, quelle que soit son ancienneté,
+ sa simplicité/rudimentarité ou sa singularité.</li>
+
+ <li><i>“Un sacré paquet de temps sans aucune faille à distance dans les réglages par défaut !”</i> –
+ <a href="https://www.openbsd.org/">OpenBSD</a> entend répondre aux impératifs élémentaires de sécurité,
+ de paramètres par défaut sains et de coutumes de programmation
+ sensées (minimalistes). Ils sont notamment réputés pour la qualité et la lisibilité de leurs pages de manuel (manpages).</li></ul>

+ Et concernant ce en quoi le champ des Sciences Humaines est hélas réputé n'avoir pour seule utilité que
+ les “compétences douces,” je dirais que grâce à ces années j'ai pu comprendre que ce n'est pas tout
+ de se sentir taraudé par une interrogation ou l'autre, pour que celle-ci dépasse le stade de l'angoisse existentielle

+ <section><h1>Internement</h1><h3>Retour sur la situation de patient psychiatrique</h3>
+
+ <p>La psychiatrie n'est pas une science exacte. Je consentirai peut-être à me soigner à l'aide
+ de médicaments lorsque la Science aura suffisamment progressé, d'ici un demi-millénaire.</p>
+
+ <p>L'absence de solidarité masquée dans le corps social par le vernis de la politesse et des conventions est davantage palpable
+ au sein de l'institution. Je veux parler des relations entre patients : de mon expérience, c'est à celui qui sortira
+ le plus tôt ; des semblants de liens peuvent se tisser mais une relation fondée sur rien de plus que le temps passé
+ en commun lors d'un séjour psychiatrique n'est pas faite pour durer.</p>
+
+ <p>Un cran au-dessus dans la hiérarchie, le personnel soignant des infirmiers semble se réguler autour de deux archétypes caricaturaux, l'un ne jurant
+ que par l'observance des prescriptions médicales et l'autre principalement par la “compassion” pétrie de bien-pensance et de la
+ <span title="« Ne respecte pas la pitié ou la faiblesse, car elles sont une maladie qui contamine le fort. »">mièvrerie
+ des bons sentiments</span>. Les deux cependant se plient à la règle,
+ et obtiennent leur paie habituelle en fait d'efficacité dans la guérison.</p>
+
+ <p>Un troisième profil moins courant, dont on peut d'ores et déjà supposer que ceux-ci n'ont pas renié les idéaux
+ de soin allant de soi lorsque l'on s'engage dans cette voie, fait davantage preuve de bon sens et se voit moins crispé autour de la règlementation
+ par définition inadaptée à la variété des cas individuels et particuliers.</p>
+
+ <p>Parmi « ceux qui rentrent chez eux le soir, » restent les décisionnaires finaux que sont les psychiatres proprement dit,
+ une espèce étrange qui, si l'on ne peut pas non plus affirmer avec une entière certitude que ce dut être leur unique motivation,
+ semble pour le moins s'être résignée à simplement contribuer à l'avancée de la Recherche en matière de psychopathologie
+ – utilité détournée de la pratique de consigner la prise des traitements et les observations relevées lors des entretiens.</p>
+

+ <h1>Fresh from the ward</h1><h3>Feedback on having been detained in psychiatry</h3>
+
+ <p>Psychiatry is not an exacting science. Maybe I would consent to medicate myself using synthetic drugs once Science has made sufficient progress, by half a millenium.</p>
+
+ <p>The nonexistent solidarity masked in the social body by the veneer of politeness and conventions can be felt more strenuously within the institution.
+ I speak there of the relationships between patients : in my experience, it is up to the one who will leave first ; seeming ties may be forged
+ but a relationship founded on nothing more than the time spent together during a psychiatric sojourn is not made to last.</p>
+
+ <p>One step further above the hierarchical ladder, the nursing staff of caregivers seems to be regulated around two caricatural archetypes,
+ one swearing only by the observation of medical prescriptions and the other mainly by “compassion” steeped in good-doing and
+ <span title="« Respect not pity or weakness, for they are a disease which makes sick the strong. »">sentimental mawkishness</span>.
+ Both however bend to the rule, and receive their habitual payment in place of actual efficiency in recovery.</p>
+
+ <p>A third, least encountered profile, of which one may already assume that those did not disown the ideals of care that stand for themselves once one trods this path,
+ demonstrates the more common sense and the less uptightness around regulations by definition maladjusted to the diversity of individual and singular cases.</p>
+
+ <p>Amongst « those who get back home at night, » remain final decision-makers i.e. psychiatrists proper,
+ a peculiar species which, if one may not either claim with entire certainty that this would have been their sole motive, seems at the very least
+ having resigned themselves to simply contribute to the advancement of psychopathological Research – the hijacked usefulness of
+ the practice of writing down the taking of medication and the observations recorded during interviews.</p>
